The eighth and final season of the fantasy drama television series Game of Thrones was announced by HBO in July 2016. Unlike the first six seasons that each had ten episodes and the seventh that had seven episodes, the eighth season will have only six episodes.

Like the previous season, it will largely consist of original content not found currently in George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, and will also adapt material Martin has revealed to showrunners about the upcoming novels in the series, The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. The season will be adapted for television by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. Filming officially began on October 23, 2017, and concluded in July 2018. The season is scheduled to premiere on April 14, 2019.

What We Know About Season 8?!

Is there a trailer for Season 8 of Game of Thrones?

There’s still no official trailer yet for the final series – but a number of teasers have been released, sending the internet into a predictable frenzy. The first shows Jon Snow bringing Daenerys Targaryen home to Winterfell, while the second (and much longer) clip above gives a horrifying glimpse of Jon and his sisters in the family’s crypt. In case you needed a reminder: winter is most definitely here.

When will Season 8 of Game of Thrones air?

Sky Atlantic has officially confirmed that the drama will return on April 19 – nearly a full year later than anticipated. The reasons for the delay are twofold. Firstly, a desire to perfect the final episodes – which will feature plenty of groundbreaking battles scenes and next-level special effects. Secondly, filming needed to take place during the coldest months of the year, given that the Army of the Dead is officially marching on Westeros.

What will happen in Season 8 of Game of Thrones?

Naturally, the internet is rife with theories about the plot of the final series – but hardly any details have been 100% confirmed. (The creators even went as far as hiring drone “guns” to shoot remotely operated cameras out of the air in an effort to prevent leaks.) There will, of course, be the final confrontation between the living and the dead – a record-breaking battle scene. Entertainment Weekly also revealed that the first episode will be set in Winterfell – a nod to the original series’ premiere. Also, beyond the fate of humanity, however, there are other pressing questions. What will happen when Daenerys finds out that Jon Snow is in fact, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne? Will Cersei really betray Jamie Lannister? And, most importantly, will Brienne of Tarth finally get together with Tormund Giantsbane?

Which characters will be returning in Season 8 of Game of Thrones?

Every key character who has managed to avoid death thus far will likely return. The only question marks are around the fate of Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) and Beric Dondarrian (Richard Dormer), both of whom were at the Wall when it collapsed. Sherlock’s Mark Gatiss, who plays the head of the Iron Bank, also revealed that he never makes an appearance in the final series.

Who will direct Season 8 of Game of Thrones?

So the first, second, and fourth episode by David Nutter – the Emmy Award-winner behind some of the series’ most nail-biting moments, from the Red Wedding to Cersei’s Walk of Shame. Meanwhile, Miguel Sapochnik, who directed Battle of the Bastards and Hardhome, has signed on for the third and fifth episodes – and George R. R. Martin’s co-creators D.B. Weiss and David Benioff will take the reins for the finale.

How many episodes will there be in Season 8 of Game of Thrones?

The final series will include just half a dozen episodes – fewer than any other season. The good news? Looks like the episodes will last between 60 and 120 minutes – with a rumored budget of $60 million in total.
